Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is to dispel the myths and historical misunderstandings surrounding the "faith of our fathers." What influence did the "faith of our fathers" have on the framing of the constitution of the United States and does it have a bearing on today's society? This thesis posits that the phrase "faith of our fathers" has been denoted to men who were mere preachers in their colonies. These men influenced their colonies, their young nation, and their world because they were involved socially and politically, as well as spiritually in their communities. This thesis contains a discussion of 19 th century religion, the basic influence that religion had on political life, the impact of the revolution on America, the state constitutions, the Constitutional debates, and finally what the Constitution did and didn't do in regards to religion.
