Abstract/Summary:
Charitable and nonprofit organizations that support military veterans provide a valuable and honorable service. Military veteran nonprofit organizations offer benefits such as organized road races, aquatic activities, and business networking events which help to maintain the fraternal comradery veterans experienced while serving in the military. According to the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), organizations incur a five percent loss of revenue each year due to occupational fraud (ACFE, 2016a). The purpose of this project was to examine the Wounded Warrior Project, to determine whether additional resources, such as monetary donations to charitable organizations, help the veteran community. This project attempted to answer: Whether veteran non-profit organizations such as the Wounded Warrior Project implement compliance or risk governance standards in their business model? What material is publicly available for financial donors to review before providing financial resources to veteran non-profit organizations? How financial donors to veterans' charitable organizations can feel confident their personal funds go to the stated mission of the charity? The literature studied for this project confirmed certain gaps in fiscal reporting by nonprofit organizations. Although certain entities with a focus on establishing compliance standards in the nonprofit sector exist the industry has yet to embrace the idea of creating a self-regulatory organization that could enforce an agreed upon set of ethical standards. Lastly, recommendations provide suggestions to enhance fiscal reporting and transparency by the nonprofit sector.
