Abstract/Summary:
Since the implementation of the 1970 UNESCO Convention, the antiquities trade has increased regulation to keep illicit objects out, but this change has not been effective to stop the trade of illegal works on the licit markets. An in-depth analysis of International Treaties, U.S. Laws, and dealer practices regarding Due Diligence and Provenance Research within the international antiquities trade is performed to establish the crux of the problem. Following this analysis, changes to the legal and non-legal structures are proposed to create a better environment to prevent this aspect of the market.
