Abstract/Summary:
This qualitative, retrospective study of a shamanic healing approach called Jaguar medicine (JM) revealed the transformative healing experiences of 5 North Americans during and after a 5-week seminar series and subsequent monthly gatherings. The development of the JM seminar series by two shamanic healers and their personal initiation into JM were also discussed. Data were collected through in-depth, semistructured interviews.;The participants were from a diverse professional background and were already, in some capacity, working as healers. All participants were White. Participants, had no religious affiliation, and all of them had previous shamanic experiences.;The data were organized to construct case narratives and were examined through the thematic analysis method to assemble a cross-case analysis. This analysis was essentially divided into the following two thematic sections: (a) Participants and their perceptions of JM (early history of suffering, exploring spirituality, insight into JM, and principles of JM), and (b) Experiences of healing and transformations through JM (connectedness, dreams and stories, healing and transformation, and new directions in life). Identified themes emerged consistently across the interviews and illuminated participants' processes of healing and transformation during and after the JM seminar series.
