Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to identify inservice needs of agriculture teachers in Utah (N = 78) during the 2004--05 academic year. A census of the population was used. The survey instrument consisted of three sections: demographics; core competencies; and course competencies that derived from 11 courses from the Utah curriculum for agricultural education. The instrument was based on the Borich needs assessment model.; All inservice needs were analyzed and ranked using mean weighted discrepancy scores (MWDS). The areas in which agriculture teachers were most in need of inservice were: developing supervised agricultural experiences (SAE) for students, promoting community cooperation to assist the local program, and recruitment. Inservice priorities from course competencies include: (a) biotechnology and genetic engineering, (b) land leveling and surveying, (c) animal waste management, (d) plant/pest identification and control, and (e) electricity.
