Workers in the field of complexity face a classic problem: how can we tell that the system we are looking at is a complex system? Or given a system, we might as well ask "How complex is this system?" One such system is the biological system of nucleic acids where, one would want, at the least, to compare two species. Our approach has been to first establish a relation between the measures of entropy and complexity and then prove its validity and consistency across all datasets.; We have proposed a new measure called Conservation Index for rating complexity amongst species. In this research we have shown that highly conserved species have a high conservation index and its corresponding entropy value is also high. During the course of our analysis of protein database we were also able to show that certain species have unique signature proteins.
