Abstract/Summary:
Biotechnology in food production continues to generate controversy over the risks and benefits associated with its use. One critical factor affecting the future of this technology is the consumer acceptance of genetically modified foods. Using data from a survey of university students, this study examines public acceptance of biotechnology in food production as it relates to consumer characteristics and external influences. Empirical results suggest that while consumers have some reservations regarding GM foods, they are not decidedly opposed to this biotechnology. Consumers' economic and demographic variables are weakly related to their acceptance of GM foods. However, public trust in regulators and producers are significantly related to their acceptance of food biotechnology. Consumer acceptance of genetic modification is driven primarily by perceptions of risks, benefits, scientific knowledge and safety of these food products.
