Abstract/Summary:
This thesis is a study of the ferns and fern allies of Berks County, Pennsylvania as well as a consideration of the endangered and threatened pteridophytes in the state of Pennsylvania. In addition, it is a study of pteridophytes found at Hawk Mountain.;In the analysis of the three herbarium collections, 64 species of pteridophytes representing 13 families were found for Berks County. Five of the species found in Berks County are species of special concern in Pennsylvania. Twenty eight of the pteridophyte species were found to be associated with Hawk Mountain.;Three herbarium collections of ferns and fern allies that had been collected in Berks County were studied in order to compile a database of Berks County Pteridophytes. The collections included those of: Hans Wilkens, which was located at the Thomas Ford Elementary School in Reading, PA., Dr. Archibald Judd which was stored at his home in Hamburg, PA., and that of Maurice Broun which was located at the Muhlenburg College Biology Department in Allentown, PA.
