Abstract/Summary:
Honeycomb panels have very high stiffness-to-weight ratios, which make them particularly useful in the aerospace industry. The main objectives of this thesis are to investigate the vibrations of this type of structure, assess the methodology used in modelling the porous honeycomb core, and conduct experiments to validate the modelling methods.; The finite element program ANSYS was used for analysis. The 3-D model is introduced to validate the continuum model commonly used in studying the vibrational of a honeycomb panel. In the continuum model, the honeycomb core is considered a homogeneous medium. In the 3-D model, the honeycomb core is considered a 3-D structure made of many hexagonal cells.; Contributions of different equivalent elastic properties of honeycomb cores to vibrations of panels were analysed by using a continuum FE model. The experimental results were obtained for two honeycomb specimens and compared with theoretical results. The two results matched very well.
