Abstract/Summary:
Chapter 1 is a brief review of the experimental aspects of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry. The instrumentation required to perform FT-ICR mass spectrometry is described and the mathematical basis of FT-ICR mass spectrometry is discussed.; Chapters 2-5 present the results of our investigations of the reactivity of organoscandium ions with alkanes and alcohols. In Chapter 2 we examine the reactions of Sc(CH{dollar}sb3)sb2sp+{dollar} with methane, ethane, (2,2-D{dollar}sb2{dollar}) -propane, (1,1,1,4,4,4-D{dollar}sb6{dollar}) -n-butane and (2-D) -isobutane, while in Chapter 3 the reactions of CH{dollar}sb3{dollar}ScCH{dollar}sb2{dollar}CH{dollar}sb3sp+{dollar} with methane, ethane, (2,2-D{dollar}sb2{dollar}) -propane, (1,1,1,4,4,4-D{dollar}sb6{dollar}) -n-butane, (2-D) -isobutane and n-pentane are observed. In both systems {dollar}sigma{dollar}-bond metathesis reactions similar to those observed in liquid-phase systems are seen. In Chapter 4 we return to the Sc(CH{dollar}sb3)sb2sp+{dollar} ion and investigate its reactivity with cyclopentane and cyclohexane. We then change our focus in Chapter 5 to the {dollar}sigma{dollar}-bond metathesis reactions of Sc(OCD{dollar}sb3)sb2sp+{dollar} with water, ethanol and 1-propanol. In this case ligand exchange equilibria were observed via {dollar}sigma{dollar}-bond metathesis and used to evaluate the relative bond energies of various Sc{dollar}sp+{dollar}-alkoxide bonds.; In chapter 6 the reaction of Cl{dollar}sp-{dollar} with ClONO{dollar}sb2{dollar} is examined. This reaction was found to be fast and efficient in the gas phase, which raises the possibility that Cl{dollar}sp-{dollar} might react directly with ClONO{dollar}sb2{dollar} on water ice films on the surface of type II polar stratospheric cloud particles.; Chapter 7 investigates the reactions of nitrobenzene and the explosives 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane (RDX) with Si(CH{dollar}sb3)sb3sp+{dollar}. Chapter 8 extends this work to the explosives EGDN (ethylene glycol dinitrate) and PETN (pentaerythritol tetranitrate). For all the explosives examined adduct formation with Si(CH{dollar}sb3)sb3sp+{dollar} and characteristic fragment ions are observed. This suggests that these types of reactions could be useful as a detection scheme for common explosives.
