Abstract/Summary:
This study evaluated actual bacteria counts in four different commercial encapsulated Lactobacillus (L.) acidophilus probiotic dietary supplements. Actual bacteria counts determined by plate counts for each product were compared to the claim on each label to verify if it was correct. L. acidophilus is an unstable bacteria known to decrease in viability throughout storage over time. Therefore, actual bacteria counts were plated every 12 days for two months to test whether the stated label claim remained constant to the end of the expiration date.;The results indicated that actual counts for two products were significantly higher (p ;This study showed that for the products tested, even though L. acidophilus counts decreased over time, two of the four labels remained accurate throughout expiration, while the other two did not.
