Abstract/Summary:
The preparation and chromatographic evaluation procedures of adamantyl-bonded silica-based stationary phases for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) are described. The silica modification procedure follows a previously established method consisting of the catalytic hydrosilylation of terminal olefins on a hydride-modified intermediate to obtain ethyl- and propyl-adamantyl bonded packings. 1-Vinyladamantane is prepared by pyrolysis of the borate ester of 1-adamantane-ethanol. 1-Allyladamantane is prepared by the adduction of 1-bromo-adamantane and allyl-bromide, and the product is dehalogenated with zinc. Columns are evaluated by using several selected probes including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as selected basic compounds. No significantly improved silanol shielding appears to be provided by the structurally rigid adamantyl groups compared to the dynamic linear C...
