In this work, we present the results of our efforts in fabricating and characterizing one-sided all-thin-film single chamber solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) was used jointly with photolithography to deposit and pattern ceramic thin-films as a replacement to the customary slurry smearing (SS) method. These techniques were used to implement an innovative design, according to which both electrodes are placed on the same side of the electrolyte in an inter-digitated geometry with buried current collector.; Before producing such a cell, we first acquired the expertise needed to deal with electrochemical devices by reproducing the results of the pioneering group of Hibino. We therefore implemented a controlled atmosphere electrical measurement set-up and, as a first step, measured the conductivity of anodic SS ZrO2:Y2O3-Ni (YSZ:Ni) thin films under CH4:O2 and H2:N2.; Subsequently, the morphology of PLD anodic thin-films was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, as a function of the oxygen background pressure (OBP) maintained in the deposition chamber.; Microstructure of PLD anodic films was then studied by X-ray diffraction.
