Abstract/Summary:
Southern pine green weight equations are available. However, current weight equations simulate green tree weight immediately after felling. This study simulated tree weight at the first delivery point and developed compatible weight and volume functions. Profile equations were developed from felled loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) trees. Statistical analyses indicated that fewer profile measurements did not decrease reliability of diameter predictions from profile equations. Volumes computed with full- and partial-profile equations to various merchantability limits for sample trees were statistically different but not practically different. Results from profile equation predictions indicated that fewer stem profile measurements can be taken without sacrificing reliability of either upper-stem diameters or tree volume estimates. Compatible equations were developed to predict weight or volume to user-desired merchantability limits. Some differences were recognized between standing green and delivered weight equations; however, definitive weight differences could not be substantiated.
