Abstract/Summary:
The objective of this investigation was to determine the incidence of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus in oysters (Crassostrea rhizophorae) sold at retail market in Boquerón, Puerto Rico. Samples were obtained between June and December of the year 2001. The incidence of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus was determined using the Most Probable Number method (MPN). The pattern of susceptibility to antibiotics and chemotherapeutical agents of the isolates was performed with the Kirby-Bauer method. The isolates were compared using the statistical method of Average Linkage Cluster Analysis. During the study the local ambient temperature was relatively constant (25.8°C–29.2°C). The results showed low incidence of Vibrio parahaemolyticus (0.56–2.43 log10 cfu/g oysters) during June, July and the first fifteen days of August. In September, V. parahaemolyticus (4.7 log10 cfu/g) and V. vulnificus (2.5 log 10 cfu/g) showed their highest levels in the oysters analyzed.
