Abstract/Summary:
This thesis examines the rich theology of Black people through their religious experience during the period of slavery. It examines the prayers, spirituals, and excerpts of sermons extracted from the slave narratives from an exegetical viewpoint. This thesis develops a specific understanding of God by examining the Christology, Soteriology, and Eschatology found in the prayers, spirituals, and sermons. Furthermore, it examines liberation theology and offers an alternative and new theological perspective on Black theology. This thesis notes and compares when necessary, the historical development of the above doctrines and compares them with the spiritual understanding of Black people.;The content of this thesis focuses on the analysis of the slave spirituals, prayers, and the narratives during the period of slavery. A forty volume series of ex-slave narratives entitled The American Slave: A Composite Autobiography , edited by George P. Rawick, provided the personal thoughts and attitudes from 3500 slaves from 26 states. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)...
