Abstract/Summary:
Public performances of the roles of Paolino from Il Matrimonio Segretto by Domenico Cimarosa, Rinuccio from Gianni Schicchi by Giacomo Puccini, and Matt/Larry from The Face on the Barroom Floor by Henry Mollicone, all under the stage direction of Professors Leon Major and Dominic Cossa, and the musical direction of Dr. Robert McCoy and Professor William Hudson, serve as supporting musical examples representing the development of the lyric tenor from the eighteenth century to the twentieth century.;The written element consists of musical analysis of Paolino, Rinuccio, and Matt/Larry, program notes of each opera with a detailed discussions of the tenor roles and copies of archival recordings of the performances. Throughout, tessiture of these roles are compared to those of other lyric tenor roles from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries.
