| Through a close reading, this thesis analyses the influence of the Bible on Dostoevsky's "Cana of Galilee" from The Brothers Karamazov . The thesis' introduction presents a background study concerning the effect of the Bible on nineteenth century Russia and on the life of Dostoevsky. Chapter one explores the open and hidden biblical references in The Brothers Karamazov that form the context leading into "Cana of Galilee." Chapters two and three---the heart of the thesis---analyse how Dostoevsky interweaves quotes, allusions, themes, and symbols from the Gospels and the book of Revelation to create a new work, "Cana of Galilee". The conclusion of the thesis contrasts the apocalyptic and eschatological theologies of Dostoevsky from The Brothers Karamazov and A Writer's Diary, examining which is closer to the tradition of the New Testament. |
