Though ecocriticism emerged nearly the same time as postmodernism, scholars have yet to explore fully the relationship between modernism, postmodernism, and nature writing. The relationship between these literary movements must be established to understand how nature writing fills the void left by a lack of connection among people and nature. In this thesis, I used primary works from Annie Dillard and Terry Tempest Williams as well as seminal works on ecocritical theory, modernism, and postmodernism to prove that though people can use modernist themes to connect to the divine through nature, they can make fuller and more varied connections if they embrace postmodernist themes. |
