Abstract/Summary:
Matta's manifesto of architecture and its influence on Andre Breton's Surrealism remain insufficiently explored. Matta's contributions as an architect, his close friendship with Marcel Duchamp and Frederick Kiesler, and Matta's continuation of similar group projects with Constant and the Situationist International have also been overlooked.;This study situates Matta's "Sensitive Mathematics---Architecture of Time" within the history of art, and analyzes its consequences for the viability of Surrealist architecture. An examination of "First Papers of Surrealism," "Art of this Century," and the International Exhibition of Surrealism in 1947 relates ideas from Matta's text to Surrealist art display.;After a period with Breton's group, Matta worked with Constant and the "Internationale Situationniste" movement on projects of Surrealist urbanism. Hence an exploration of Constant's proposals further defines relations between Surrealism and Architecture and poses the question: Does Surrealist architecture exist only as theory?...
