Abstract/Summary:
The significance of this dissertation lies in its employing the force dynamics of causation (Talmy, 1988) and accordingly, dividing the semantics expressed by the Korean periphrastic causative construction into several concepts. This thesis argues that the Korean periphrastic causative construction expresses at least the concepts of causing, letting, permitting, telling (weak jussive), and preventing. It eventually argues that the periphrastic causative construction in Korean follows the prediction of the Interclausal Relations Hierarchy for causation (Foley & Van Valin, 1984; Van Valin, 1993; Van Valin & LaPolla, 1997).; There are two main juncture-nexus types for the Korean periphrastic causative construction, nuclear cosubordination and core coordination. The concept of causing is expressed by nuclear cosubordination. The concepts of letting, preventing, permitting, and telling (weak jussive) and expressed by core coordination.; Mono- vs. bi-clausal approaches concerning the Korean periphrastic causative constructions are inadequate, because there are three distinct juncture-nexus types, rather than two: core subordination (NOM causee) = bi-clausal, core coordination = mono-clausal, and nuclear cosubordination = mono-clausal.
