Interlanguage fossilization and stabilization, its precursor, are brought on by biological, acculturational, or interactive factors. Some of these biological factors form an unchangeable final boundary for language growth. The rest of the factors can form initial boundaries on language development which can cause fossilization if they are not adequately addressed.; This study offers a survey of the models which have attempted to address the issues of fossilization and stabilization. After discussing their contributions, the study proposes a new unified model for understanding the interaction of the variables presented by the various models.; English learners in the region of South Lebanon show stabilization due to the absence of some of these variables. After examining the situation in light of the unified model, the study proposes an English enrichment program for the region to stimulate language destabilization among these English learners and growth in the English environment. |
