Abstract/Summary:
This thesis is a study of Iamblichus' doctrine of the soul and its ascent, and a comparison of this doctrine with the teaching of St Augustine. In both parts, the concept of mediation which is fundamental for both authors is central.; Chapter One examines the position of Iamblichus as the founder of the Eastern Neoplatonic School within the history of Platonic philosophy, dealing in particular with his relationship to Plotinus and his immediate interlocutor and contemporary Porphyry.; Chapter Two is a detailed analysis of Iamblichus' concept of the soul. It treats the soul's changing nature and ontological position within the hierarchical Iamblichan cosmos. On the basis of Iamblichus' fundamental theology found in his De mysteriis, and in his more specifically philosophical works, De vita Pythagorica and Protrepticos, his doctrine of the condition and nature of the soul's conversion, ascent and union to the divine will be examined. Particular emphasis is given to the precise nature and role of theurgy as both preparing, accompanying and transcending theoretical philosophy. In order to do this, we will extensively treat Iamblichus' concepts of education ( paid3i&d12; a ) and love ( 4ili&d12; a ).; Chapter Three presupposes the results of the consideration of the Iamblichan doctrine and compares it to that of St Augustine. The historical connection and context of Augustine's reaction to Neoplatonic theurgy is exposed. On the basis of central topics (the figure of the mediator, the role of the community, the significance of ritual and sacramental life, the importance of grace and love) the significant differences as well as an underlying continuity between the two thinkers are demonstrated.
