Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of Chinese immigrant adults in providing care for their elderly parents. Ten respondents, 2 male and 8 female, were interviewed for this qualitative study that delved into their experiences and challenges associated with caring for their aging parents.; Findings in the study have focused on the Chinese values of filial piety and reciprocity as factors in impacting the respondents' caregiving attitude and behavior. Changing family structures particularly female labor participation was evident and so was acculturation to the American way of life through the use of western and Chinese medicine. Lack of Chinese-speaking care providers and culturally appropriate services were identified as some of the barriers in meeting the needs of the aging Chinese elderly.; Results of this study underscore the survival of centuries-old Chinese traditions of filial responsibility in a modern society. However, emerging influences are slowly undermining the extended family network which was once a stronghold in Chinese family caregiving.
