In particular, this study investigated two questions: (1) First, how can the instructional technology be used effectively in P–12 social studies classrooms? (2) Second, with respect to GIS, is there a potential gain in its use for teaching social studies to P–12 students? And if there is that potential gain then, is GIS currently used effectively in Public schools?; The data was collected in two ways: (1) through a survey of social studies teachers (500) in Franklin County Public schools about the topic and (2) through the observation of selected social studies teachers in middle and high school in these four Jackson County Public schools.; The survey was approved before its distribution to all middle and high schools in Jackson County Public schools by the University Human Studies Committee and the Accountability, Research and planning in the central office of Jackson County Public schools.
