Mobile IP is an Internet protocol with enhancements to support host mobility. Its goal is to provide the ability of a host to be connected to the Internet regardless of their location of attachment. TCP performance degrades for a mobile host(MH) using Mobile IP due to frequent handoffs. Movement of MH results in change of IP address of MH. Packets destined to ME's previous location get lost. This loss will be drastic if MH does fast handoff. Active Handoff Scheme(AHS) handles the above mentioned problem using active network technology and mobile agents. Mobile agents aid in local registration for MH in foreign network. Active nodes aid in buffering the packets, which are destined to MH's previous location. Buffered packets are then delivered to MH after its location is known to AN. We compare TCP performance for AHS with Mobile IP, Mobile IP Route optimization and temporary home agent scheme using simulation.
