Abstract/Summary:
The Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) highway network was designed to provide an efficient and safe transit system to its users.; In order to preserve the efficiency of its network, the MTQ is developing a complete access management policy. As part of this process, the MTQ has initiated in cooperation with the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal a global study aiming at: (1) Evaluating the situation of access management in Quebec; (2) Confirming the existence of a significant negative impact of higher access densities on safety; (3) Developing new methods to evaluate the importance of the impacts of access configurations on safety for any road segment.; To achieve these goals, a statistically representative sample of roads (1300 km) has been selected using the quota method. An inventory of the locations and characteristics of accesses and recorded accidents on the sample roads have been achieved. This led to the building of a 17 000 accesses (driveways and minor intersections) database. Those accesses have been classified in distinct categories based on the nature and traffic generation of the corresponding properties. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)...
