A novel approach for the networking of universal data acquisition units has been developed. The scheme uses ARCNET protocol on an RS485 loop with a maximum of 32 nodes.; An initial overview of existing energy monitoring unit (EMU) is presented. It is followed by the design improvements to the existing EMU to enhance its processing speed. The network communication is a new feature of the EMU. With this feature added it is possible for two or more EMUs to be configured in an RS485 loop. The serial communication capability of the EMU allows remote configuration of the EMU by a PC over a telephone line.
