Abstract/Summary:
The implementation of Environmental Management Systems (EMSs) in the Mexican Manufacturing Industry (MMI) can enhance its environmental performance, which may control its impact on the biophysical and social environments, and increase its international competitiveness. This document proposes that the Mexican Manufacturing Industry should implement Environmental Management Systems; it (1) defines an Environmental Management System, (2) identifies the benefits, driving forces, and barriers for the Mexican industry, and (3) suggests four strategies for its implementation. A literature review and empirical data was utilised to support this thesis. This document proposes four strategies based on the natural-resource-based view of the firm (Hart, 1995) to encourage the implementation of Environmental Management Systems. The first strategy demands a relatively easy change in institutions to facilitate the implementation of Environmental Management Systems; the second strategy suggests the creation of a “clearinghouse” for information about Environmental Management Systems and its implementation; the third strategy suggests the creation of a cluster to facilitate the implementation of Environmental Management Systems; and the fourth strategy suggests the creation of an initial-test group involving three surveyed innovative companies, the public sector, innovative universities and the researcher.
