Abstract/Summary:
The country of origin can play a significant role in the development of its cultural property maintained in museums of other countries. While some countries pursue repatriation objectives, the country of Korea has used such cultural property to promote its cultural identity at international. levels. Although museums possessing collections of other cultures have been considered to be responsible for their own collection development, the country of origin can provide the greatest benefits to collection and exhibition development, such as financial support, accurate interpretation, and various cultural exchanges. This approach makes it possible for museums around the world to initiate ‘international collaboration’ that facilitates a more equal representation of diverse cultures. Such mutually enriching partnerships provide the museum community with a new way of thinking and acting in a new age of multiculturalism accelerated by rapid globalization.
