Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this exploratory descriptive study was to describe and compare the "cues to action" among participants attending a smoking cessation program for the first time (FTAs) with those repeating (RAs) the same program. From the sample size of 89, there were 48 FTAs and 41 RAs. Bonferroni's multiple comparison method was used to make three comparisons. Additional comparisons were made between males in the two groups and females in each group. The null hypothesis proposed that there were no significant differences in the cues to action between each group. Data was collected using the Cues to Health Action Questionnaire (CHAQ) (Jones and Fowler, 1998), a 32 item, 4-point Likert scale with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.93. Significant differences in the cues to action and potential interventions for each group are described, along with implications for nursing practice and further research.
