Abstract/Summary:
Many challenges currently, and in the immediate future, face CGAs (Certified General Accountants) in public practice. The role of CGA firms differs somewhat, in size as well as history, from CA (Chartered Accountant) firms and, in the United States CPA (Certified Public Accountant) firms, however their functional roles parallel. CGA public practice firms enjoy equal public practice rights in British Columbia, as CA firms. Established firms, or those practitioners who may have graduated some years ago, remain heavily reliant on traditional accounting services. However, these traditional pursuits are being steadily eroded by factors not controllable by practitioners, such as competition from non-accounting firms, globalisation, and technological advancements. Exacerbating the negative influence of these factors is the phenomena of skill shortage. Practitioners are finding it ever more difficult to hire affordable, qualified staff.;The purpose of this research project is to study and provide practical recommendations related to the changing environment in which CGA firms must perform. An inductive approach is being undertaken, with a view to formulating possible recommendations. The data is compiled into four major research areas, the changing economic environment; competencies; skill shortages; and inspiring change. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
