Abstract/Summary:
In this thesis I describe the experimental progress towards the construction of an atomic qubit array. 49 single atom qubits are trapped in a 7 x 7 array which is then used in quantum logic experiments. I will describe how the atoms are loaded, initialized, measured and used to perform single- and two-qubit operations. We achieve parallel single qubit operations with an average fidelity of 0.9983(14) and single qubit operations on a single site with fidelity equal to 0.9923(7). Interactions between atoms excited to Rydberg states are used for two-qubit operations and two qubit entanglement. We achieve a two atom entanglement fidelity just above threshold and discuss in detail some factors limiting our two-qubit gates.
