Phase transfer catalysts have been used industrially for the last 40 years. There are several types of phase transfer catalyst that are being used in chemistry and industry: quaternary ammonium salts, quaternary phosphonium salts, crown ethers, cryptands, etc. This research will focus on quaternary alkyl ammonium halide salts because they are inexpensive and widely used as catalysts for transferring anions in phase transfer catalyzed reactions in industry. Also new and novel compounds that contain sulfur have been developed. Using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Evaporative Light Scattering Detector (ELSD), gravimetric method, and Gas Chromatography (GC) to study the thermodynamic behavior, partition coefficient and the selectivity of a selected example reaction, a better of understanding of this new class of phase transfer catalyst was obtained. These data show how the significant characteristics of the new quaternary ammonium salts compare to a similar structure traditional phase transfer catalyst. |
