Abstract/Summary:
The use of boiling fluids as an efficient means of cooling such high heat flux devices as nuclear reactors, heat exchangers, huge electronic machines, and rocket engines is of interest owing to the relative high heat transfer rates made possible by the boiling process. Recent research indicated that the surface conditions and the surface chemistry strongly influence the heat flux in the nucleate boiling regime. The surface parameters like roughness of surface, number of nucleation sites, the extent of oxidization of the heater surface are few of the parameters which have been extensively studied. One such parameter, the contact angle, has been given a great attention in the recent years. The study of wetting adhesion, mining, and floating requires the knowledge of the contact angle. This work has been undertaken to develop a new correlation for the critical heat flux on the horizontal cylinders in saturated pool boiling. Contact angle is incorporated in the correlation to get a new expression for the critical heat flux.
