Abstract/Summary:
This thesis reviews the flood history and flood control measures developed in the Yellow River and the Yangtze River in China, and the Mississippi River and its tributary, the Tennessee River, in the United States. The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River and the Tennessee Valley Authority offer case studies. An overview is given on the flood hazard research in North America to demonstrate the evolution of both structural and non structural measures in flood control strategy, though the use of original materials is limited in scope. Brief and speculative comments are made concerning the comparison of flood control measures in the two countries. Finally, a conclusion is drawn to assess the possibility of adopting the experiences of the United States to the flood control problems in China.
