Abstract/Summary:
Experiments were performed to investigate the relation between the heat transfer rate and the fin tip-to-shroud clearance for shrouded heat sinks under uniform heat flux conditions. Heat sinks of rectangular profile were in vertical position in the experiments. The fin spacing, fin length, heat sink's base length, power dissipation and the clearance between the fin tips and the shroud were varied during the experiments.;It was found that shrouding, in general, enhanced heat transfer significantly. For a fixed heat flux and heat sink configuration, the maximum temperature on the heat sink dropped as the clearance was increased, attained a minimum, and then started to rise again, which suggested that there was an optimum orientation for the shroud. Results were plotted and a Nu number relation was developed for heat transfer from shrouded heat sinks. Least square method was used to find an equation which related Nu number to power dissipation and shroud clearance for each heat sink.
