The concurrent validity of a new measurement tool, the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), and an established adaptive behaviour scale, the Scales of Independent Behavior (SIB), was examined in 10 male children and youths with Fragile X Syndrome. Deficits were expressed in all three areas of occupational performance (self-care, productivity, and leisure), with the SIB recording a larger number of problem areas for each subject. Parental comments indicated that the semi-structured COPM was too general a measure and was difficult to use compared to the structured format of the SIB. These findings have direct implications for the validation process of this new measure of occupational performance.
