Abstract/Summary:
This thesis based on recently developed tense theory in general linguistics, describes the properties of tense in Mongolian.;This thesis mainly presents a detailed examination of the non-past tense and past tense forms. First, I give an overview of the general range of the Mongolian non-past tense form. Secondly, I introduced verbal forms which are relevant in the past tense. This is followed by detailed examination on the various meanings of each form and explanations on the differentiation of two past tense markers -jai/-cai and -la/-le.;I basically follow Comrie's (1986) definition of tense to test Mongolian tense, and I also divided the Mongolian verb to four types based on its semantic meaning. The result of my examination shows that tense form, especially the non-past tense form and the past tense form -la/-le, has a close relationship with the semantic meaning of verb.
