Abstract/Summary:
This thesis explores the intertwining of private and public pasts in the novels of Penelope Lively. Lively continuously expands upon her ideas in each successive novel, and this progression is mirrored in more sophisticated narrative forms. This examination of three of Lively's novels, The Road to Lichfield, Moon Tiger, and City of the Mind, reveals Lively's key ideas about the public and private past and stresses in particular the relationship between these ideas and the narrative technique of each work.
