Abstract/Summary:
Il Vago Alboreto di Madrigali et Canzoni a Quattro Voci was published at Antwerp in 1597 by Pierre Phalese the younger. Much of the collection was reprinted by Phalese from an anthology published in 1595 in Venice by Ricciardo Amadino under the title Di XII Autori Vaghi e Dilettevoli Madrigali a Quatro Voci. These two anthologies are unusual in being devoted to madrigals for four voices, the composition of madrigals to four voices being in decline by the last decade of the century.;Only the compositions of G. Gabrieli, Porta, and Palestrina in the collection have been published. This study presents an edition of and commentary on the unpublished works in the collection, which contains both madrigals and canzonette. The composers represented are mostly Italian, including six from Verona. Their music is not avant-garde, but does reflect a strong concern with the expressive declamation of the text.
