Abstract/Summary:
This thesis focuses on the difficulty jurors face when they are given traditional jury instructions. It identifies the cause of the failure of the instructions as the legal language used in the instructions and suggests that the judges and lawyers who draft pattern jury instructions are concerned with technical accuracy rather than communicating with jurors. As a solution, the thesis suggests that journalists have the skills necessary to communicate with jurors and should be called on to assist in drafting instructions.
