Abstract/Summary:
The threat of cyber-crimes against US citizens and US assets is a growing concern to federal law enforcement agencies. Cyber-crimes committed against Americans and American institutions are more sophisticated than ever before, and may have far-reaching impacts. Understanding the capabilities of various federal law enforcement agencies in regards to combatting cyber-crime is important to determining how the resources of those agencies should be allocated in the event of a cyber-crime. The purpose of this research was to determine what types of cyber-crimes the main federal law enforcement agencies are able to investigate and prosecute. The purpose of this research was also to determine the jurisdictional powers that federal law enforcement agencies possess in investigating cyber-crimes, and how they work together to combat the various types of cyber-crimes they investigate. In some cases, the various federal law enforcement agencies make their own unique contributions to fighting cyber-crime, and have their own unique jurisdictional bounds in which they operate. In other cases, the various federal law enforcement agencies have overlapping jurisdictional powers, capabilities, and target the same types of cyber-crimes. In cases where investigative efforts overlap between federal law enforcement agencies, the coordination of investigative efforts is necessary. The federal law enforcement agencies that investigate cyber-crimes have established means of coordination, and seek to deconflict investigative efforts when necessary.
