Abstract/Summary:
American foreign policy in Africa has been at the epicenter of discussions in academia, government, and non-government institutions since post-colonialism. Policies that the US has pursued in Africa span from promoting democracy to ensuring peace in nations plagued by civil war. These efforts include alleviating poverty and addressing problems of diseases, terrorism, and poor governance. To that end, the purpose of this study was to examine the US role in resolutions of conflict in Africa against the background of the different challenges emerging countries confront in building viable, secure nationhoods.;In addition, the dynamics of national conflicts and international interventions in ensuring the building of structures of peace and security were assessed. Specifically, the wars between the now Two Sudans have bedeviled the region with endless cycles of violence, destruction, and population displacement for much of their post-independence period. US policy engagement has been instrumental in ending the long North-South conflict through mediated diplomacy. Conceptual and theoretical frameworks on conflict resolution, international intervention and nation building are adopted in assessing the development of the Two Sudans.;The thesis of the study is to convey that the adoption of important policy and diplomatic strategies of peace led by US policies is associated with the creation of a political setting that paves the way for sustainable regional security.
