Abstract/Summary:
The main focus of this thesis is to show how immigrants have impacted the culture of the United States over the last 200 years. This is a geographic, computer interactive and user friendly tool which would be able to help sociology students attain a visual learning experience. The tool displays a color-coded map of the United States where each of the colors represents a section of immigrants that have influenced a state or city. Important cities of various regions have also been identified on the map. If the users click on any of the plotted cities then they would be taken to a webpage that gives detailed information about the city's history and how immigrants have influenced the culture of that city and surrounding region. Additionally, in order to enhance the user experience, the tool enables the users with various customizing options such as adding new points and information, selecting layers, editing hyperlinks, etc.;Visual Learning has been identified as one of the preferred methods of teaching; however, sufficient tools are not available to aid schools and universities to make the optimum use of this method. Hence, this tool, which was created, using JAVA as the programming language and Map Objects Java Objects (MOJO), is a step to mitigate the issue. It is a contribution to the field of academics.
