Abstract/Summary:
As the Hispanic population increases, the number of Hispanics in K- 12 schools will increase. Institutional support is needed at the university level that can help Latino students as they work towards a 4-year degree. It is critical for universities to look at the factors that hinder and the factors that promote first generation Latino retention in higher education. Examining both sets of factors can provide insight when developing retention programs for first generation Latino students. This project proposes a counseling group that will offer first generation Latinos at a 4-year university an opportunity to: connect with faculty, staff, and mentors; identify and use campus resources that will support their goals on their experience at the university; establish personal and academic goal, and reflect on their self-motivation, values, and identities; and build connections and knowledge that will foster the institutional support that can help them graduate with their 4-year degree.
