Assessing the relationship between gender difference, spirituality and academic performance among African American college students

Abstract/Summary:
There are litanies of elements that influence African American college students' low graduation rates, high drop-out rates, longer stay in school. These elements may be different based on a number of factors including gender difference, spirituality, and academic performance (GPA). African American college students' experiences stressors such as racial discrimination and harassment, poor academic preparation, lack of tradition of higher education in the family, poor finance, and troubles family. This study attempts to assess relationship between gender difference, spirituality, and academic performance (GPA) among African American college students. 101 (51 males and 50 female) African American college students responded to a survey measure assessing these variables and Pearson Moment correctional analysis was performed to determine if there were relationships between these variables. The research found that spirituality was positively correlated with academic performance (GPA) in both Africa American males and female college student; however, the finding was only significant in female. Additional research should be done to determine others factors that could help in improving African American college students low graduation rates and high drop-out rates.
