Abstract/Summary:
New computational requirements resulted from the advancement of computer technologies and distributed applications necessitate the realization of new computing framework. Computing framework for the autonomous agent systems such as flexible manufacturing system, intelligent network management system, and etc. is specified, defined, and established. Agent computing is identified to consist of distributed computing, organizational computing, and mobile computing. It requires to be distributed computing since all the computing resources are physically dispersed and logically autonomous. It requires cooperation among the autonomous agents, which is the organizational aspect of agent computing, in order to achieve system goals. It requires that the communication network underlying the agent computing be mobile network since the agent moves physically across the network.;Our agent computing is found to be a high level variation of concurrent objects. System integration methodologies are investigated because individual agent are to be built to integrated as a whole. In the modeling and analysis of system integration, time Petri net is observed to be effective tool. Abstraction technique for time Petri net is provided to relieve the problem of state explosion.;Cooperation among the agents play the most important role in agent computing. Cooperation required in our framework is formally specified by CSP formalism and the unified theory of cooperation, communication, and the attitudes of agents are provided. Attributes needed for the description of agents are defined and analyzed. The reasoning system of each agent as defined in the thesis is proved to be sound. Cooperation mechanisms and strategies are specified and provided. Simulation studies using distributed event simulator are performed to investigate the feasibility of cooperation.;Mobile communication network is defined for effective and efficient mobile communication for agent computing. It turned out that conventional wireless media access protocol and network layer protocol was inadequate for the communication among mobile agents. New extended MACA protocol for the wireless media access control is invented and analyzed. New network architecture defining mobile network layer services is suggested.
