An approach for mobility support in software defined network based mobile cloud computing

Abstract/Summary:
There has been a phenomenal increase in the applications developed specifically for use on mobile devices, such as smart phones, which are connected to the cloud computing environment. For the applications to execute efficiently on mobile devices, in conjunction with peer applications executing on cloud infrastructure, efficient mobility support by the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and migration of processing support provided by peer applications executed on different servers are required. Currently, mobility support is provided by ISPs using mobility support extension of IPV4 and mobility support of IPV6. This support is not efficient because of the way the control plane functions are performed in the current Internet. Software Defined Network (SDN), which is expected to be the technology on which future Internet will be based, offers four critical innovations which can satisfy the dynamic computing and storage needs of new services and modalities. These innovations are: "control plane" and "data plane" separation, "control plane centralization," "control plane programmability," and "standardization of application programming interfaces (APIs)." One such modality is Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC). One of the central issues to be addressed in MCC is mobility support. We have proposed an approach for mobility support in SDN based MCC which will enable applications to execute efficiently on mobile devices, in conjunction with peer applications executing on cloud infrastructure. We plan to use existing protocols, as they are or with some modifications, to provide efficient mobility support for the End Systems which use MCC as a computing paradigm.
