| The current thesis concentrates on the effects of spreadable media regarding news and current events. The Blaze, a news website, was utilized for the focus of this study in order to create results that specifically centered on this type of media. An extensive literature review is provided with research from major scholars in the fields of transmedia and spreadable media; most notably Henry Jenkins. Jenkins stated "If it doesn't spread, it's dead" (1), which is the basis for conducting this analysis. Results indicated that a majority of respondents (80%) were not aware of The Blaze as a news website, and only 20% of total respondents were able to partake in the remainder of the survey. Some significant results from those 20% show that participants are concerned with sharing material based on how they feel it will affect their peers; motivations include others' interests, creating discussion online, and attempting to have a real world impact. According to this study, a significant real world impact is not taking place due to the spreadability of current events. |
